Death of Colin Chapman

WRRC members will doubtless be saddened to learn of the death after a lengthy period of illness of long standing member Colin Chapman. Colin's widow Diana emailed to give us the news that Colin had passed away peacefully on 30th July. His funeral is on Friday, 7th August at twelve noon at Burbage Parish Church (St Catherines), near Hinckley, and afterwards at the Cross Keys for a buffet lunch. Colin's interest was particularly in the Taff Vale Railway and he had several books published (including The Aber Branch published by the WRRC) and numerous articles dealing with various aspects of the company's history. Our condolences to his family.

Picture Gallery Updated

More new Welsh railways pictures have been added to the Picture Gallery. Visitors to the new WRRC website should check out this feature in particular, whilst members who would like to contribute to the gallery can do so directly themselves. Please email one of the Committee members in the first instance stating that you would like to be able to do this and quoting your membership number. We will then furnish you with the log-in details (user name & password) and you can start creating your own picture album on the WRRC website. Its quick and easy and will keep the site full of interest for potential new members, as well as encouraging existing members to make full use of it. Contact Nigel Nicholson (nigel.nicholson@ntlworld.com) or Neil Parkhouse (neil@lightmoor.co.uk) for the details.

RAILWAY ARCHIVE No. 23

Railway Archive No. 23, published on 1st June 2009, contains much of interest for Welsh Railways enthusiasts. The latest selection of Hopwood photographs from the Rev’d Canon Brian Arman feature the Cambrian Railways, whilst in ‘Wish You Were Here?’, John Alsop takes us on a railway postcard tour of Flintshire. Stan Vickery, who worked at Cardiff Newtown Goods Depot in the early/mid 1950s has contributed a piece on the workings and his memories of the depot. Stan also used to take his camera in to work with him, so the article is illustrated with a superb selection of photographs he took inside the depot which show the day to day of the job itself. Finally, we return to the subject of the ‘Jellicoe Trains’, the Admiralty coal trains during the First World War. Ted Talbot has written extensively on the L&NWR’s involvement, which includes details of the route used by their trains out of South Wales, whilst John Hodge and Richard Woodley have provided more detail on the role of GWR motive power and Aberdare Shed in the working of these trains. Copies of Railway Archive No. 23 will be on sale on the Circle’s stand at the AGM, or can be bought direct from Lightmoor Press via their website www.lightmoor.co.uk
