Merthyr Tydfil, Tredegar  and Abergavenny Junction Railway
Walk led by Stephen Key (A&DSS)

Note this walk is taking place on a SUNDAY and is a joint venture with the Abergavenny & District Steam Society (A&DSS)  along the trackbed of the Abergavenny to Merthyr line from Brynmawr to Abergavenny.

It is some years since the Circle walked this line and with the recent celebration of the fiftieth anniversary of the last train, organised by the Circle and the A&DSS, it was agreed that a walk should be undertaken to view the remains.  It will be a chance to view the Clydach & Gelli Felen tunnels, Gelli Felen Halt and the Clydach viaduct plus other remains. As the trackbed from Clydach station to Gilwern station is in private ownership a detour will be necessary.  There will be a buffet lunch at ‘The Lion’, Gilwern at 13.00.  Please advise me if you wish to partake of this buffet lunch. Walk to resume about 14.00 with arrival in Abergavenny by 17.00.  The trackbed from Gilwern to Llanfoist is now tarmac.

Meet at Abergavenny bus station at 10.30 where a forty seater bus is being provided to take members to the starting point of the walk in Brynmawr.  If there are more than forty participants then cars to be used to transport excess numbers to starting point. Although the walk is mainly downhill, strong footwear and waterproof clothing is advised.

Sunday 29 June

The Corris Railway
Meet at museum at 11.00, lunch 12.00, train down to Maespoeth 13.00.  Visit original engine shed, signal box and new carriage shed.  Return on 15.00 train or a later train. Complete journey, including talk usually takes about an hour.  Visit finish about 16.00/17.00.  Reduced fare for party, £4.00 per person with over 60s £3.00.  Museum free.  Members wishing to attend please advise as soon as possible.  Members attending are advised to make their own arrangements for refreshments as those at railway are limited.  The railway has been very helpful in making these arrangements which are flexible depending on weather & number of passengers travelling on the line on this day.

The railway is on the A487 road from Machynlleth to Dolgellau.  To reach the station turn off the A487 opposite the Braich Goch Bunkhouse & Inn and the station yard is the second turn on the right as you enter the village just past Holy Trinity Church.  Parking is very restricted in the area although there is a small car park just beyond the station
