Railway Archive No. 23, published on 1st June 2009, contains much of interest for Welsh Railways enthusiasts. The latest selection of Hopwood photographs from the Rev’d Canon Brian Arman feature the Cambrian Railways, whilst in ‘Wish You Were Here?’, John Alsop takes us on a railway postcard tour of Flintshire. Stan Vickery, who worked at Cardiff Newtown Goods Depot in the early/mid 1950s has contributed a piece on the workings and his memories of the depot. Stan also used to take his camera in to work with him, so the article is illustrated with a superb selection of photographs he took inside the depot which show the day to day of the job itself. Finally, we return to the subject of the ‘Jellicoe Trains’, the Admiralty coal trains during the First World War. Ted Talbot has written extensively on the L&NWR’s involvement, which includes details of the route used by their trains out of South Wales, whilst John Hodge and Richard Woodley have provided more detail on the role of GWR motive power and Aberdare Shed in the working of these trains. Copies of Railway Archive No. 23 will be on sale on the Circle’s stand at the AGM, or can be bought direct from Lightmoor Press via their website
